Beat Exam Stress & Strain

It’s exam time again, with thousands of young people revising and cramming in order to pass those all-important school exams. Whether you have a young family member working towards common entrance, or older children taking GCSE or ‘A’ levels, it can be a stressful time for the whole family.

We often see teenagers and children with ‘tension’ type problems across their shoulder girdle, upper back and necks at this time of year. Some of our patients will come in with headaches and migraines, that have often been exacerbated by studying for long periods of time at a computer or worse, slumped on their beds with a lap top on their knees.

Carrying school bags of heavy books can result in low back and shoulder problems and added to the levels of general anxiety patients often find themselves distressed and uncomfortable at the very time they need to be functioning well. All this in conjunction with growth spurts and hormones. It’s a lot for any young person to have to to deal with!

student exam stress and exhaustion

Here at Cedar Hall Clinics we are happy to treat students of all ages. We are aware that teenagers are not often forthcoming when they are not feeling on top form and they often find it difficult to explain that they are a bit ‘up tight’ both emotionally and physically. Gentle osteopathic treatment can often help to relieve some of the mechanical stresses and strains associated with long hours of study and we are also able to offer advice about the best ways to position computers and laptops to reduce postural strain.

We have male and female osteopaths so each patient has a choice of practitioners. The only requirement is that any patient under 16 years old is accompanied by an adult.

A free assessment is a popular choice if you really don’t know what’s causing your pain or discomfort – it gives students, parents & practitioners a chance to find out what’s going on & discuss treatment options. Why not give it a try?

In the meantime good luck with those exams from all of us at Cedar Hall Clinics.

With thanks to our osteopath Lorraine for this blog

Buyer Beware

Have you ever picked one grocery item over another because of the health claims on the label? You may have been duped. That’s because terms like fat free or all natural are often slapped on a food item that may not be healthy at all. Look carefully at the ingredients list and see for yourself what is actually contains.

One that recently came to light was on a Fructose Sugar packet. With a lovely logo on the front showing a healthy jumping person and saying “Natural Fruit Sugars” what is did not say on the from was also contains Aspartame.

So look at the ingredients, not just the front!!

Aspartame   aspartamo-E951

The Sweet Taste of Success – Khai Style

Success

Is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. So whether that is winning a Gold medal at the Olympics or even getting up early for school, you have succeeded. Now even though these points are not similar there is a common word used to accomplish this and that is WORK.

Yes, you even have to work to get out of bed because we all love to lay in especially if we have been up all night and have to get up early but in order to succeed we MUST work for it. Everyone who is successful has had to work for it, in my case, Athletics, hurdles to be exact.

Racing to Success

Racing to Success

I started off as a thrower but transitioned into a runner and that didn’t happen overnight. I had to work to transition my power from my arms to my legs. As we all know Speed+Strength=Power and you have to work hard to accomplish even one of these elements in order to achieve your main goal. This requires a lot of work.

Now when I talk work I’m not talking the bare-minimum, I’m talking 100%, Blood Sweat and Tears, put everything into it, “Train hard, Win easy”. That concept goes for anything in life, even getting out of bed or working your hardest to finish the race first.

Even though it may be a struggle or you feel like giving up, just remember why you started, was it worth investing all that time just to give up? No one can take your success away from you.

Khai Riley Laborde 110m hurdles  Cedar Hall Clinic sponsored athlete.

Rehabilitation Following Injury, Surgery or Illness

RehabilitationAs recovery from pain, injury or surgery continues, some patients may benefit from our unique Rehabilitation and 1-2-1 Prescriptive Exercise. This exercise prescription is usually part of your overall osteopathic consultation, however if you require a more intense programme, additional sessions can be arranged with our Rehabilitation specialists. Our practitioners will provide you with a personal exercise plan and make sure you have a full understanding of each exercise. Each movement will be demonstrated and your technique checked whilst performing the exercises. A comprehensive exercise pack will be given to each patient for use at home.

These exercises allow you to build strong stabilizing muscles, decrease your incidence of aches and pains and strengthen your abdominal core. Your core comprises of many muscles that need to be strong and balanced so you can perform everyday activities with ease. They are also vital in all sports and without capable core muscles there is a high risk of injury in other parts of the body due to imbalances.Rehabilitation

Our Rehabilitation team help athletes recover from injury with treatments and exercise regimes that help reduce pain, promote movement of stiffened muscles, restore normal function of the injured site, and prevent recurring damage. Various techniques used in rehabilitation have significance of their own in improving physical performance and restoring athletes to normal activity:

  • Stretching and bending exercises improve flexibility of the injured muscles
  • Massage techniques relieves the tension of the muscles and improves the blood flow to the injured area
  • Stability exercises restores the functions and movements of the broken or injured joints
